Spiral

This image of the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas is a mystery. When I first produced this image, I thought the spiral was a set of high clouds. But closer examination revealed that a boat was traveling across the spiral and its wake is cutting through one arm of the spiral. Also, the popcorn clouds that are common in the tropics are clearly casting shadows on the spiral. This feature is approximately 18 miles in diameter, and so the people on the surface have no idea this formation is present.

This long chain of cays offers rich sailing, diving, and fishing opportunities with miles of white sand beaches, many of which are inhabited only by shore birds and the occasional iguana.

The area covered by this image is approximately 33x37 miles.
